The City of Sylvania no longer issues business licenses. Businesses operating within the city limits, including home occupations, are required to obtain a City of Sylvania Occupational Tax Certificate. The occupational tax certificate is required by Article III, Occupational Tax, of the City of Sylvania Code of Ordinances.
Applications for new tax certificates are made by submitting a completed application either by mail to Occupational Tax Department, Sylvania City Hall, 104 South Main St., Sylvania, GA 30467 or in person at City Hall.
If you are a Hairstylist, Electrician, Plumber, Doctor, Dentist or if you hold any other state license, a copy of your state license must be presented at the time the certificate is issued. If you are mailing in your application, please attach a copy of all applicable certifications or state licenses, as well, as all required affidavits.
The occupational tax certificate must be displayed in a conspicuous place, in the place of business. If the taxpayer has no permanent location in the city, such occupational tax certificate shall be shown to the chief of police, any police officer of the city or to county deputies, upon request.
The occupational tax levy is based upon the number of employees at the business located in the city limits.The tax rate determined by employees for each business, trade, profession, or occupation is as follows:

Insurance companies (underwriters) pay a flat rate of $40.00
To apply or renew an occupational tax certificate you can download an application and mail or bring to city hall.All occupational tax certificates are due by March 31 of each year. A 10 percent penalty will be assessed for late payment.
