The City of Sylvania is one of 49 Georgia communities receiving reliable, economical wholesale electric power from MEAG Power, a community-owned, not-for-profit electric company. MEAG Power is a consortium of public power systems in Georgia.
Public power costs less, due to its not-for-profit nature and efficient management and operation. According to the U.S. Department of Energy’s Energy Information Administration, investor-owned utility residential rates are 14 percent above those of public power utilities. Investor-owned commercial rates are 9 percent higher.
The five employees of the Electric Division maintain more than 125 miles of power lines and the city provides service to more than 2,000 customers.
