The Nutrition Department provides information and a range of services, activities and volunteer opportunities that promote personal growth, health, friendship and independence for local residents over the age of 55. The department also manages four daily Meals on Wheels delivery programs for homebound elderly. Hot meals, as well as shelf staple, breakfast and frozen entrees are available for delivery into qualifying elderly homes.
The Senior Wellness Center is conveniently located on the outskirts of the downtown area and is primarily funded for ages 60 and above. However, volunteers are accepted at age 55. The center is jointly funded by the city and county governments and also receives support funds from the local United Way of Screven County, Federal Senior Employment Program, and the Area Agency on Aging.
Hot, nutritional meals are served daily to registered clients. An exercise room at the center features two recumbent bikes, a treadmill, and video equipment for chair exercise. A safe, concrete sidewalk track surrounds the building for lap walking. Other activities include music, bingo, crafts, outings, monthly birthday parties, and educational programs.
Volunteers are always needed. If interested, please contact center director Zandra Overstreet.
