The City of Sylvania wastewater treatment plant processes all wastewater generated from residential, commercial and industrial entities in Sylvania.
The Wastewater Treatment Plant has a design capacity to treat 1.52 million gallons per day. The plant treated an average of 473,600 gallons per day and produced 104 dry tons of sludge in 2012. The sludge is being sent to Augusta where is is used as a beneficial re-use product, not placed in a landfill.
The treatment plant removes contaminants from wastewater and household sewage, both runoff (effluents), domestic, commercial and institutional. The process utilizies physical, chemical and biological processes and produces an environmentally safe fluid waste stream (treated effluent) and a solid waste (sludge) suitable for disposal or reuse (usually as farm fertilizer).
Storm water, which includes runoff from the streets from rain, goes through a separate system and is not treated.
