The City of Sylvania Gas Division provides safe, clean, efficient, reliable energy at reasonable cost to more than 1,200 customers. With two full-time employees, the division's main responsibilities are the design, construction and maintenance of the city's gas line infrastructure.
Natural Gas, also known as methane, is a colorless, odorless, fuel that burns cleaner than many other traditional fossil fuels. It is one of the most popular forms of energy today. It is used for heating, cooling, production of electricity and it finds many uses in industry.
Natural Gas is produced by drilling into the Earth's crust where pockets of natural gas were trapped hundreds of thousands of years ago. Once the gas is brought to the surface, it is refined to remove impurities. Then it is transmitted through large pipelines to residential and business customers. The distributor adds an odorant to the gas as a safety measure so that people will be able to tell if there is a gas leak, or if they have forgotten to turn off an appliance.
Natural gas usage has increased by 35 percent over the last decade, and is projected to grow by 45 percent by 2015 ... and 99 percent of all natural gas we use comes from North America. Consider this:
